PARENT RESOURCES FOR ADDRESSING VAPING

Our primary function as a school is to:

• ensure that our students and staff are safe and to
• provide opportunity, access, and support to ensure that each and every student can learn
• protect the learning environment from distractions

We are sharing some resources below to help raise awareness at home and provide some tips to parents in having conversations with their child. Our children are being targeted by some vaping companies who are designing products that resemble everyday items, like highlighters, USB drives, and even pens. Their motive? To make it easier for students to discretely vape without raising suspicions.

We are confident that the school and community can work together to reinforce the dangers of vaping to our children and ultimately keep our schools and homes safe. There are serious consequences that students face if caught with a vape in their possession. Students should notify an adult immediately if they see a vape or student(s) vaping. Throughout the school year, we take great effort to ensure our students understand the dangers as well as consequences of holding, using, buying, or selling vapes on school grounds. We ask all parents to help us reinforce these messages by reviewing the resources below and having conversations with your children. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Here are some tale-tale signs that adults can be looking out for:

Appearance

If a highlighter or USB drive has an unusual shape, strange vents, or lacks brand labeling, it should raise suspicion.

Weight

Vaping devices often weigh more than their everyday counterparts due to the battery and other internal components.

Unusual Odor

Vaping devices emit a distinct odor, usually fruity or sweet. If you catch a whiff of something unusual, it's time to investigate further.

Functionality

If a supposedly innocent item has buttons, lights, or charging ports that seem out of place, it’s likely to be a vape.
